Selection and Application of Ball Transfer Units

Feb 03, 2026 Leave a message

As a mechanical component capable of facilitating flexible, multi-directional rotation, the universal ball serves as a core element in equipment such as universal ball conveyors and universal ball tables. Its applications span numerous industries-including logistics and conveying, mechanical manufacturing, electronics assembly, automotive production, and port operations-as well as sectors such as electronics, hardware, chemicals, and food processing. By providing low-resistance, omnidirectional motion support, these components significantly enhance the efficiency and flexibility of material handling and positioning tasks.

A universal ball conveyor is a non-powered conveying system that utilizes ball casters to transport goods; items resting on the balls can be moved in any direction and are typically flat-bottomed and smooth-such as pallets. A universal ball table consists of a platform formed by mounting multiple universal balls onto a steel plate at a specific density; this configuration allows work plates, material bins, and similar objects to slide flexibly, thereby reducing physical strain on workers. These tables are widely deployed in assembly lines for conveying, transitioning, and cornering operations. In logistics sorting lines, universal balls enable the flexible redirection and diversion of parcels and cartons; in mechanical processing, they are used for the translational positioning of heavy tooling plates; in automotive manufacturing, they facilitate the transfer of heavy components on body assembly and engine production lines; and in port terminals, they assist with container loading, unloading, and bulk cargo handling. Universal ball tables are particularly well-suited for manual redirection between workstations on production lines, as well as for use in assembly stations and packaging areas.

When selecting these components, it is essential to comprehensively consider factors such as load capacity, material composition, mounting method, and operating environment. Regarding load capacity, selection should be based on specific weight-bearing requirements-categorized, for instance, into light-duty (under 1 ton), medium-duty (1–5 tons), and heavy-duty (over 5 tons) types. In terms of materials, metal universal balls (e.g., steel or stainless steel) offer excellent wear resistance and are suitable for heavy-load applications or environments requiring high durability; conversely, plastic universal balls (e.g., nylon or POM) are lightweight and corrosion-resistant, making them ideal for settings with strict hygiene standards, such as food processing facilities. Mounting methods vary-including flange-type, press-fit, screw-mount, adhesive-mount, and spring-loaded options-and should be selected based on the specific characteristics of the mounting platform and the required method of secure attachment.

Regarding the operating environment-such as applications requiring corrosion resistance, low noise, use in cleanrooms, or high-frequency, low-friction scenarios-products possessing the corresponding characteristics should be selected. Other factors to consider include ball diameter, friction coefficient, and the need for built-in lubrication or debris discharge ports.
